Currently Playing #1

The last few months I’ve really tried to play more games than usual. For the longest time I only played Destiny 2. As much as I love the game as a whole, my experience just isn’t what it used to be. I took a few months off to see what else was out there. I really got into trophy hunting on the PS4 and PSVita. That had me hooked for a few months. Unfortunately, beating really bad games for Platinum trophies started to take a toll on me. I beat a few good games in between the mess of cheap games. Steven Universe was a really fun RPG. I also 100% completed Maneater. I was not expecting much from Maneater and although repetitive, it was still a fun experience. As per the usual Destiny once again reeled me back in. So now as I juggled life in Destiny, I’ve also tried to juggle a few other games.

Destiny 2

The game that has been my constant since it’s release in 2014. Even though I took a few months off from Destiny I still keep coming back it. I think it is so familiar that I can’t let go. The overall experience isn’t what it used to be though. I find myself logging in and feeling unhappy almost instantly. I know it sounds like I should just walk away and never look back. I have that same thought as well. But there is just little things that make me want to grind for stuff. I used to enjoy the solo PVE experience in Destiny. Now I find it an unfun slog. The few times I am having some fun is when I’m playing with others. It doesn’t make the game feel any better but it makes it an enjoyable experience. My current goal is to achieve all the triumphs related to the season. After that I want to put the game down for a few months if possible until the Fall DLC. Until then I’ll still be playing this game.

The Room Series

I’ve always been intrigued by these puzzle room games. I saw one of The Room games played on Twitch a few months ago. I bought the collection soon after (they were on sale) and they sat in my library until recently. I, of course, started with the first in the series. I have to admit that it was a lot of fun. There were a few puzzles that really had my stuck. One in particular made me close the game and come back to a few hours later. It took me roughly 3 hours to finish The Room. Overall it was a great experience. The puzzles made me feel both dumb and like a genius. Dumb for the almost simple solutions. Finding the solution made me feel so clever and like a real code cracker. Unfortunately after that I moved on to the rest of the series.

The Room 2 and 3 play about the same as the first entry in the series. The games do feel bigger starting with the second game. Although The Room 2 was still enjoyable I did use hints on some puzzles. Some of the puzzles just felt tedious to me. It felt like more work than fun. On the final puzzle I relied almost entirely on the hint system. I knew what had to be done but I had no indication of what I needed to do. The Room 2 took me about 6 hours to complete. I beat it over the course of maybe a day and felt really frustrated at the end of it. The Room 3 took all my frustrations with part 2 and amplified them. The Room 3 is the largest game in the series. It has more puzzles and multiple endings to unlock. Puzzles had puzzles inside of them. You had to carry some puzzle solutions between rooms. I found the final installment in the series the least fun. The puzzles were interesting at times but just felt like a chore. I never felt that feeling of success. It was always more of, “Okay I did it. Time to do it again”. The Room 3 took me roughly 6 hours to complete. I only achieved one of the endings and swiftly uninstalled the game. I don’t know what is needed to get all the endings but I really did not want to stick around to find out.

More to come

I have so many games in my backlog. My goal is to actually try and get through as many as I can. I have a few games in mind and also a few a casually play that I will talk about later. The idea is to pace myself and find games I hope I enjoy.
