Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (PS5)

I don’t remember if I have ever played a Ratchet & Clank game. I know the series has been around since the PS2 days and I’ve seen the cover art in the past. I really do think the latest title is my introduction to the series. And what a great introduction it was! I really enjoyed my time with this game. There were a lot of aspects about this game that I enjoyed. If I had to choose the main thing I loved about this game it would be the color palette. I loved how bright and vibrant the colors were in many of the levels. It was a nice change of pace from all the doom and gloom design choices of most of the games I’ve played recently. Tied to the great design choices for “A rift Apart” were the gorgeous graphics. I played the entirety of the game on “Performance Mode RT” which was running at 60fps with the resolution slightly turned down while the lighting and other aspects of the game were enhanced. I never felt like it hindered my playthrough and never noticed any performance dips. The game did feel a little slow in the third act of the game but it did a great job of keeping up the fun the rest of the time. I never felt bored or wanted to rush to the end like I normally do in games. The insane variety of guns always kept the combat fresh if you wanted to use and power up other weapons. I tend to stick to guns I enjoy in most games I play so I would only swap to other weapons as a last resort. The fast loading between stages (and even during levels) truly showed off the power of the PS5. In a span of seconds the game would zip you through multiple, completely different worlds. Without any noticeable effects to your game. That really was incredibly impressive. Ratchet & Clank has a ton going for it. The one big issue I have with this game is the price. I think $69.99 usd is way too much for this game. I understand its “next-gen” but you are realistically getting between 8-12 hours of gameplay. Yes, you could do New Game + and maybe try and max out all your weapons but that is not going to be what most people do. If you buy this game and even slightly dislike it you will feel ripped off. I enjoyed the hell out of this game but I also felt it was too expensive for the short experience you get. If you really want to experience what the PS5 has to offer this game is a must for you. I would only suggest you wait for the game to drop in price before pulling the trigger.
