God’s Demon by Wayne Barlowe

Quick Summary

God’s Demon by Wayne Barlow is the magnificent story following the aftermath of Lucifer’s rebellion in The Above. All of the fallen angels have been cast down to Hell and have been stripped of all their angelic beings. Hell is already occupied by supernatural beasts and beings that wander its miserable landscapes. The main story follows Sargatanas who is a Demon Major and Beelzebub, the appointed ruler of Hell. The cast of characters is wide but easy to keep track of. The plot is pretty basic and fairly predictable but that does not take away from the overall story.

Thoughts

It took me a little bit to really get into God’s Demon. I think I did not start to appreciate the book until roughly a quarter of the way in. The characters felt pretty generic and it just seemed like a lot of nothing was going on. To be fair I was also not really giving myself over to the book. I went into the book fairly blind so the initial, heavy handed religious overtones really threw me off. Once I really started to pay attention and let the book sink in, I was instantly hooked. From my understanding the author is known for drawing amazing Hellscapes. His ability to describe the many areas of Hell was truly amazing. The way they would describe mists of blood over fields, felt extremely vivid. The way they described things that were indescribable was incredible! The thing that really sold was the writing. The way some characters conveyed such sorrow was really sad to read but also very beautiful. Some passages just felt like you were watching a person being completely shattered to their core. The ending made me shed a tear. Again, not because the story surprised me. It was the words that were exchanged and the way the situation was built up. I read this on Kindle and am actively searching for a physical copy of the book. I think this is by far one of the best books I’ve read all year.
