Why You Should Watch The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

Being exposed to The Disastrous Life of Saiki K has been the best thing to happen so far in 2026. My daughter had it on one day and I was tuned out. Something was said in the show that caught my attention and made me start laughing out loud. From that moment I was invested. As of the time of writing, I’ve rewatched the base shows twice. And I’ll probably watch it again a few times if I’m being honest. My favorite anime is by far My Hero Academia and I can’t imagine rewatching every episode from the beginning.

Saiki Kusuo is the main protagonist and he’s basically a god. If I’m not mistaken he proclaims himself as a god in one of the episodes. All of his abilities and powers are interesting but those same powers are what make the show comical. The writing of the show is what drew me in the most. The interactions between characters and the sheer randomness of some of them keep the show entertaining. I couldn’t describe all the side characters with any kind of justice so you’d have to watch. My favorite is definitely Teruhashi and Nendo.

Essentially Saiki K is a highschool student with god-like powers but wants nothing more in life but to be average. Yet he manages to attract the attention of just about everyone around him. Each character brings their own insanity to the show. They all follow pretty archetypal anime characters but some of them turned up to the max. Even on my second rewatch I still find new things to laugh at. I walk around the house saying, ” Yare Yare” to myself which is essentially Saiki’s catchphrase.

The entire show is on Netflix. The first season has a dubbed version but not the second. There’s an Awakening show also on Netflix. From my understanding these are cannon but stuff they couldn’t fit into the main series. But the final episode in the Awakening series is the actual final episode of the show. Confusing, I know. There’s also a live action movie that I have not watched so I can’t vouch for that. Each episode consists of smaller “episodes” so everything is very bite size.

Either way give it a shot if you have some free time or even to have on the background (at least season 1). If you give it a shot let me know what you think because The Disastrous Life of Saiki K has become one of my top favorite animes of all time. But I also don’t watch a lot of anime so take it with a grain of salt.
